The lack of unified approaches being deplored by current art historians may stem from their insistence in interpreting works as products of ideology and individual effort. Feminist theory provides an alternative to the cult of the artist by questioning the way in which criticism has also become a product of ideologies, which makes it a form of practice and not theory. The current practice only serves to destroy old myths which will merely be replaced by new myths.
