John Milton's 'Paradise Regained' and 'Samson Agonistes' could reflect the author's use of biblical reinterpretation in order to surpass a perceived unsuccessful and impotent political experience. The poems reflect a marked discouragement at the prospects for political action. In creating the interpretations of outwardly expressed opposition, of a recounted history using biblical reinterpretation, Milton challenges readers to resist already-interpreted history and read it for themselves.
