There is irony in the title of this volume on "the French idea of freedom." The deputies of the French National Assembly who debated and approved "The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen" in 1789 self-consciously envisioned themselves as giving lessons to the rest of the world and proclaiming not the rights of Frenchmen, but those "for all times and nations." Yet the central theme of all these essays is the extent to which the famous declaration of 1789 reflected the circumstances of the old regime in France and the French Revolution itself.
