Rare lichen found near Waltham.

A routine environmental survey has uncovered a rare type of lichen, usually found in the Himalayas, near Waltham.

Leicestershire County Council highways design engineer Lisa Bateman was investigating proposed repairs to a damaged culvert, and discovered the possibility of rare mosses and lichens in the area.

She called in lichenologist Ivan Pedley who discovered a bright orange lichen living on the brickwork of the culvert.

He was able to identify it as the Sunburst Lichen or Xanthoria ...
