Squirrels face new threat.
|
WILDLIFE chiefs are asking for the public's help as they battle against a suspected new pox outbreak which could prove potentially catastrophic for Morpeth's red squirrel population.
There have been two incidents of suspected squirrel pox this week, one in Shadfen and one in Mitford, where a family of four squirrels has been infected. Five squirrels have so far been infected with the disease, of which three have already died.
But the disease is so virulent and contagious, wildlife experts suspect that this is only the tip of a really nasty iceberg.
