Chinese socialism failed to end gender inequities, particularly among the women in rural areas of China, because of the pervasive patriarchical nature of the state, the household, and of socialism. Patriarchy functions as a separate system, sustaining itself through the economic and political changes brought by socialism. Peasant households continue to be patriarchical, their attitudes having been reinforced by state policies on reproduction and labor production.
