OSHA requires employers to document energy sources and develop procedures to prevent unexpected activation of equipment and possible injury
OSHA's lockout/tagout standard (29 CFR 1910.147), enacted in January 1990, mandates specific ways to de-energize equipment during servicing and maintenance operations. Justification for the law was to prevent the 120 fatalities, more than 28,000 lost workday injuries, and nearly 32,000 nonlost workday injuries expected to occur in industrial plants annually because of improper isolation of equipment.
