Open architectures for computer numerical control (CNC) machines will improve the flexibility of machines and processes in the future. However, at present, CNC operations are based on specific types of computer hardware and software. The three main personal computer systems are PC-based systems, Apple Macintosh and Unix-based systems while a CNC operating system software standard has yet to be developed.
