One of the most dramatic events of the late Renaissance period was the sack of Rome by an imperial army in May of 1527. The imperial commander, Charles de Bourbon, a somewhat enigmatic figure, is mentioned only briefly in most books on the period. Vincent J. Pitts has now written the first general biography of Bourbon to appear in some time.
