A theatrical performance in honor of a wedding between two members of the Italian nobility in 1473 presages the development of Renaissance theater. The performance draws upon classical Roman dramatic material which had been under interdiction by the Roman Catholic Church. The Church had forbidden the use of works by Roman dramatists since they believed that theater was a venue for immorality, but the adoption of these works to create a new theatrical form led to the evolution of drama.
