Multiculturalism pervades universities as much as it has in the workplace. Matthew Arnold was the foremost proponent of the view that the noblest objective of universities is the transmission of culture. He envisioned higher education. However, the universities during the 1950s were already affected by utilitarian issues and social justice. A newer concept of cultural relativism evolved. Diversity became the doctrine of North American society during the 1950s.
