Perhaps it is because humans emerged from the waters at the dawn of history that the sport of swimming exerts such a hold over the sporting mind. In its beauty and simplicity, unencumbered by fancy equipment, complex scoring or a judge's jaded eye, swimming is unmatched among the Olympic sports. Now, in the person of 23-year-old Michael Phelps, the world is witnessing perhaps the greatest swimmer in history.
