To most Catholics outside Pittsburgh who have heard of him, Bishop Donald W. Wuerl is the man who, 10 years ago on orders from Rome, moved to Seattle as the uninvited auxiliary of and, in effect, replacement for Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen. Rome judged Hunthausen insufficiently firm in dealing with Catholic liberals, dissidents, Dignity gays and other groups that Seattle's right wing felt were out of control.
