AN average of 12 different languages are spoken by pupils at Peterborough's primary schools.

The city's population has swelled in recent years with new arrivals from eastern Europe, Portugal and African and Middle Eastern countries.

It means most of the 50-plus schools now have to cater for children whose native tongues range from Polish to the Philippines' Tagalog, with some children starting at school with limited or no English skills.
