A FORMER University of Leeds student who is one of Africa's most celebrated writers is to return to the city.

Ngugi wa Thiong'o will join leading British journalist George Monbiot to launch a Masters degree course in activism and social change.

The award winning Kenyan is professor of English and comparative literature and director of the International Centre for Writing and Translation at the University of California.

He is said to be a "a pivotal figure in colonial independence movements".
