COUNTDOWN host Des Lynam sprung to the defence of his sidekick Carol Vorderman today and told the snipers: "Give the girl a break."
Carol, the TV quiz show's resident maths brainbox, has been repeatedly accused of trying to hog the limelight since Des took over as presenter last year.
And the 63-year-old housewives' favourite has now hit back on behalf of his embattled right-hand woman, revealing that she has been "deeply hurt" by the criticism she has been receiving.
