The concept of civil society is useful for defining the boundaries of social science research. It is a more flexible process in modern times, that can be compared to other ideas of society. For example, it is distinguished from the state of nature, domestic society, ecclesiastical society, rude society and Marxism. Social inquiry is well served by approaches that do not fit traditional categories. Social science research can no longer unify all facets of society in one fundamental scheme.
