The Pew Charitable Trusts have donated millions to media organizations to encourage civic journalism, a movement that encourages citizen involvement in public affairs. Pew President Rebecca W. Rimel got the idea to link the wealthy foundation to journalism in order to bring citizens closer to their communities. Pew provides funding for polls, focus groups, a $25,000 journalism award for civic reporting, and for individual efforts of reporters toward causes the foundation supports. It is hoped civic journalism will help the news media regain public trust.
