The nawabi rulers of Awadh have rightly been described as the cultural heirs to the Mughal dynasty of India. Although the territory they ruled over in northern India (today's Uttar Pradesh), could not match the size of the Mughal raj at its height, the nawabs inherited and attracted many of the arts and artists that had illumined the Delhi and Agra courts.
