To the Editor:

A letter July 19 takes to task people offended by Barack Obama's suggestion that Americans learn a second language. The writer expounds on the benefits of learning a second language, and mentions how many citizens of other countries speak multiple languages.

The letter-writer ignores that Barack Obama didn't simply encourage learning a second language; he focused on a particular second language whose proponents would like to see a bilingual United States.
