This brilliant new study covers the history of the Ottoman Empire during its last century of reform and modernization and then studies its principal successor state, the Republic of Turkey, to the present day. It largely supplants two monographs, now out of date, that have dominated this period: Bernard Lewis's Emergence of Modern Turkey (1961) and this reviewer's History of the Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey, Vol. II: Reform, Revolution and Republic: The Rise of Modern Turkey, 808-1975 (1976).
