In a market that could drive you to drink, you can always count on beer.

If brewer Anheuser-Busch's hadn't made strong gains in the second quarter, the Syracuse Portfolio of 15 local-interest stocks would look much, much worse. As it was, the overall portfolio fell 2.8 percent.

Anheuser-Busch's stock price kept it from falling further. Boosted by rumors of a takeover by global brewer InBev that later proved true, a share of BUD grew 30.9 percent over the quarter. If only the other stocks in the portfolio had done so well.
