TWO librettists, Oscar Hammerstein and Alan Jay Lerner, wrote the lion's share of the successful musicals of the "golden" era that extended roughly from the opening of "Oklahoma!" in 1943 to 1960. After "Oklahoma!" shows were "integrated" (songs flowed from the situation and character) and were "musical plays" as opposed to musical comedies.
