Gertrude Himmelfarb's 'The Idea of Poverty' describes the Victorian culture of poverty between 1750 to 1850 from a political, economic and social viewpoint. Published in 1983, it provides insight into the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins' renunciation of his upper middle-class background and his subsequent vow of poverty. This may be glimpsed in Hopkins' poems during the period 1860-1889 such as 'Felix Randal,' 'Harry Ploughman' and 'That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire and of the Comfort of the Resurrection.'
