James Prosek remembers the incident that set him on course to become the John James Audubon for trout. In 1989, his father showed the 13-year-old fishing fanatic a magazine item about the blueback trout, a species that lived in only eight frigid-water ponds in northern Maine.
"There was no picture, so I went to the library looking for a volume on trout that would be equivalent to Audubon's Book of Birds," says Prosek. "There was nothing that could give me an idea of what it, or any other wild trout, looked like."
