The European Union imposed a worldwide ban on exports of beef from Britain government conceded a possible link between a new strain of the deadly Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and eating beef products infected with BSE, known as mad-cow disease. British ministers claimed that the country's beef is safe. But a large part of Britain's almost 12 million-strong cattle herd may have to be destroyed before the ban is lifted.
