Smoke from California forest fires may linger in Lane County's air today, but will most likely be dissipated by winds from the Pacific Ocean on Friday, an air quality official said Wednesday.

A layer of the smoke persisted several thousand feet up in the atmosphere over Lane County on Wednesday, "and if we get a good mixing, we could see some of it coming down" today, said Ralph Johnston, meteorologist for the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency.
