The redesign of the academic community magazine Lingua Franca stemmed from a belief in the magazine's editors that the publication should shed itself of any stodgy image. The new art director Paul Ritter has used woodcuts and bolder typography to impart a turn-of-the-century poster feel to the magazine. He has also given the journal a more universal feel and look by using similar conventions throughout the magazine.
