The 20 countries chosen for this article cover the entire Sub-Saharan region, with the exception of the West African countries and South Africa. Smaller countries with negligible mineral potential - Comoros, Mauritius, Reunion, Seychelles - have been omitted.

What is left is a group of contiguous (Lesotho being the only exception) countries of very varied area, population, geography and mineral endowment.
