Funny how my family's trips to Sandy Beach on Madison's Lake Mendota in the early 1960s instilled my lifelong respect for motorcycles.

Every time Dad removed his shirt, I stared in awe at scars across his shoulders and neck from a motorcycle crash years before. I winced when imagining the pain of taking out a barbwire fence after missing a corner.

When Dad said the crash turned his upper back into hamburger, my preschool mind took it literally. I envisioned a doctor packing everything back into place, much like I'd seen Mom ...
