The metaphor of consumption accurately describes the common interpretive approach to Ralph Waldo Emerson's works, which were considered a popular panacea until critics became bored of that type of literature. The interpretations of Emerson and the valuations, however, are based on the readers' biases and so may not accurately reflect Emerson at all. A broader view that accepts the contradictions in Emerson and allows for alternative readings of those contradictions would better serve Emerson and readers as a whole.
