Electricity price hike hits small firms and the poor

THE ESB's massive price hike, coming into effect in just three weeks' time, was condemned as a blow to the country's competitiveness last night.

The Commission for Energy Regulation's (CER) announcement of an interim increase of 17.5pc clearly indicated there is more to come with a further hike expected early next year.
