TAIPEI, Taiwan _ The people of Taiwan elected Lee Teng-hui president in a landslide victory Saturday, sending a defiant message to mainland China that they won't be pushed around by military threats or intimidation.

Lee won 54 percent of the vote in a four-way race, becoming the first president of Taiwan to be directly chosen by the people.
