The politics of encapsulation: Saudi policy towards tribal and religious opposition.

Post-colonial Saudi Arabia's political set-up is informed by its culture, religion, history, geography and its single-source economy. Its political character can be read through the strategies it employs in dealing with opposition. With the Shammar tribe, it included physical violence, economic dependency, religious fragmentation, detribalization, sedentarization, marriage alliances between Al Saud men and Rashidi women and marginalization through exile. The same oppressive strategies of encapsulization and economic dependency are being applied to the Shi'ite oppositionists.
