I knew there was a thrilling trip in prospect as I was heading off up to Shetland . . . the land of my ancestors. But the main question was how to travel.

In truth, there was little competition. Although the fast route by air had its plusses, I have fond memories of my previous journey by ferry in the 1970s, so the overnight sea journey won hands down.

The Hjaltland - which runs from Aberdeen to Lerwick - is a fine vessel, with my cabin accommodation rivalling that of a good hotel, and it has bars and restaurants that are top ...
