KYOTO, JAPAN -- Exposure to antibiotics in infancy appears to be a risk factor for subsequent development of atopic dermatitis, according to a prospective study of 370 German children.
"Due to the high overall morbidity and social burden of atopic eczema, any primary prevention measure is of great public health impact. Therefore, caution should prevail in the prescribing of antibiotics, especially cephalosporins and macrolides, in infancy," said Dr. Jochen Schmitt of University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technical University Dresden (Germany).
