The pagan gods in Joseph of Exeter's 'De bello Troiano.'(Notes)

Joseph of Exeter includes pagan gods in his epic poem, 'De bello Troiano,' not as characters but as metonymic devices. In the episodes that mention the goddesses Aurora, Thetis, and Minerva, the goddesses are personifications of natural phenomena: dawn, sea and wisdom, respectively. The episode during which Paris meets the three goddesses is rendered as a dream, further strengthening the argument that the pagan gods are not participants in Joseph's poetic reality.

The pagan gods in Joseph of Exeter's 'De bello Troiano.'(Notes)
Medium Aevum ; Discussions of Joseph of Exeter's epic poem on the Trojan War, De bello Troiano,(1) often refer to the poet's inclusion of pagan gods in his account of Troy's fall.
