Ancestor worship, broadly construed as belief in interaction or communication between the dead and the living, is a universal aspect of religion. In Swanson's 1964 cross-cultural study, 16 cultures (32%) were coded for an absence of belief in active ancestral spirits and eight (16%) were coded for belief in some unspecified activity.
