Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri has come to represent the new style of leadership in the Middle East. Hariri rose to power without the benefit of family connections, in fact, he has amassed a great personal fortune that is a direct result of his humble family roots.

RAFIQ HARIRI, prime minister of Lebanon since October 1992, chooses his words with care: "A country like ours needs something different, and by definition different is different. It needs an exceptional way to solve exceptional problems. The more the country strengthens, the less it needs someone like Mr Hariri."
