Gender influenced the style, tone and language of art criticism during the Renaissance era in different ways. Although the concepts of femininity and masculinity remained the same from the 15th century until the mid-17th century, their use as a 'rhetorical weapon' to construct femininity varied from seeing women as 'amorphous and indeterminate' and possessors of a disordered mind. The latter is usually given as an explanation for 'art without design or proportion.'
