Introduction

Elkhorn Slough is a shallow, seasonal estuary of about 1,200 ha at the center of Monterey Bay on the central California coast (Fig. 1). The slough extends approximately 1l km inland from Monterey Bay and is characterized by a main central channel with branching tidal creeks bordered by extensive tidal mudflats and salt marsh. A large portion of the southeastern part of Elkhorn Slough is the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR).
