Afterlife ( Lyttelton) Verdict: Live life to the Max *** CRUEL criticsmay say that Michael Frayn's new play is an opulent, over-ambitiousextravagance. But if that is the case, then it only matches the life itportrays: that of Max Reinhardt.
Reinhardt was the mid-20thcentury Jewish theatre dynamo who was driven firstfrom Germany, then from Nazified Austria, by anti- Semitism.
Reinhardt staged almost impossibly over-the-top shows, some with casts ofthousands. In his prime, he travelled abroad like an elephant-borne maharajah.
