IS Helsinki Europe's coolest capital? It's not just the city's proximity to the Arctic Circle 500 miles away that makes it cool, nor being the continent's northernmost capital and with Europe's ice-breaker fleet moored in its sheltered, Baltic harbour.

It also has a "design area" gleaming with shops full of that unmistakable clean-lined Scandinavian style, along with an enviable list of sophisticated bars and restaurants serving a range of cuisine most larger cities would envy.
