When it comes to milestones, 2007 was no different than the previous 217 years of Coast Guard history. We marked record-setting accomplishments and recognized historic firsts. For instance, this year the service acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the improbable voyage through the Northwest Passage.
In the fall of 1947, three Coast Guard cutters ended a 450-year search for a navigable passage at the northern-most end of the continent, and in so doing, became the first U.S. registered vessels to circumnavigate the North American continent.
