Copper is a versatile metal which helped mankind to emerge from the neolithic age, yet still plays a key role in modern life. As pointed out in a special supplement on the metal which accompanied the November 17, 1995 issue of our sister publication, Mining Journal, copper is still the third most used of all the metals. Total mine capacity in 1995 in the established market economy countries is almost 8.8 Mt/y, with refinery capacity amounting to 9.6 Mt/y. New mines and expansion projects are expected, over the period 1995-1998, to provide a further 2.4 Mt/y of additional capacity. ...
