The collapse of the fishery for native oysters (Crassostrea virginica) in Chesapeake Bay, USA has fueled interest in the introduction of an exotic species to revitalize a fishery and, more recently, recover lost ecosystem services. Beginning in the early 1990's, the seafood industry within the region began to request research that would identify candidate oyster species which might survive within Chesapeake Bay.
