The Catholic Doctrine of infallibility, which was promulgated after the First Vatican Council in 1870, pertains not to the person of the pope, but to the Church. A careful examination of the 'Pastor aeternus' document sheds light on the formalities a pope must observe to produce infallible doctrine.
