Twenty-seven countries have now ratified the International Maritime Organization's treaty to ban tributyltin-based antifouling paints on boat hulls.
Tributylin causes severe reproductive effects in aquatic organisms, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The treaty will take effect on Sept. 17, 2008. President Bush sent it to the Senate in late January, where it is expected to be ratified. Canada should follow suit, and Mexico has already ratified the treaty.
