World War II veteran Joe Pastorek has not forgotten the many tests the war put him through.

He served in the Coast Guard attached to the 7th Navy and vividly remembers the task of breaking through six feet ice off the coast of Greenland to get supply ships through to the U.S. airbase there.

As the heavy bow of the USS Storis pushed through the ice, Pastorek and his crewmen took turns standing two-hour watches on the deck. "It was 60 below. You had to wear goggles and a mask."
