YOU might never have given much thought to the history of the picnic, imagining it to be obvious.
Surely we all used to eat our grub in the open air, at least if we were caught short on our way home to the cave with our burden of berries or recently bludgeoned beast of forest or fell.
But NewcastleGateshead Initiative, the people who gave us Spencer Tunick, glowmobiles and a host of other wonders, inform us that picnics became popular in Britain due to the activities of the Pic-Nic Club which was founded in London in March, 1802.
